FILTER ENCLOSURE

FILTER CELL
The filter cell is the most important part of the entire oil filter!

TOTACHI makes the filter cell as high as possible, which increases the width of the filter screen (material).

TOTACHI makes the maximum number of material pleats in the filter cell, thus increasing the area of the filter screen.

TOTACHI makes the folds of the cell evenly spaced, ensuring uniform oil throughflow and low resistance of the filter cell.

Filtering efficiency (filter rating, filter adequacy, and flow resistance) depends on the filter material.

Filtering material is one of the most expensive filter components. Many manufacturers use cheap materials in pursuit of price.

HEAT TREATMENT OF THE FILTER CELL
  • Heat treatment of the filtering material prevents further moisture absorption and swelling of the material in oil.
  • We corrugate the material in the longitudinal direction, which makes each pleat wavy and prevents adjacent pleats from sticking together during operation.
  • We make the internal stiffener, the upper and lower covers of the cell of high-quality metal with a corrosion-resistant coating.
  • We provide original assembly quality of cells.

BYPASS VALVE

During normal operation of the filter, the valve is always closed.

Its purpose is to protect the engine against oil starvation and excess pressure inside the filter.

In case of excess pressure, the valve opens and allows free circulation of oil bypassing the filter cell (this usually happens during a cold start in frosty weather and in case of high oil viscosity).

The opening pressure of the bypass valve is strictly regulated by the vehicle manufacturer.

ENCLOSURELESS FILTERS – CARTRIDGES i
In addition to conventional non-serviceable filters, there are even more high-tech filtering systems in the form of a replaceable cartridge.

They are easy to distinguish since they do not have a metal enclosure. Such a filter is installed directly into the enclosure, which is an integral part of the car engine.

The main enemy of any filter is pressure drop. When a filter becomes clogged, the upstream pressure of the filter material becomes much higher than the downstream one. This is called pressure drop. If the drop is high enough, the filter material may collapse.

This is where the bypass valve comes into play. The bypass valve allows oil to bypass the filter if it is clogged. This prevents the collapse of the filter, but the oil itself is no longer filtered.

A check valve or anti-drain valve prevents oil from draining or pumping back into the oil pan. In some cases, a check valve prevents the oil level in valve train components from dropping when the engine is turned off. This can help to prevent dry starts and bearing damage.

The main advantage of a filter cartridge is that the manufacturer’s valve system remains unchanged, and the cartridge itself is noticeably cheaper. Cartridge filters are also more environmentally friendly due to their ease of recycling and/or disposal as compared to filters with enclosures.

In most cases, a cartridge filter is installed in a vertical position. In this case, the filter can usually be opened and inspected without the need to drain the engine oil. This gives you an easy way to check for impurities, debris or other problems with your engine oil.

In terms of performance, both cartridge filters and oil filters with enclosures provide equally high filtration efficiency.

But cartridges have a drawback, since such filters are more difficult to replace, as in addition to the filter itself, the O-rings are also replaced. And the installation location is often in a hard-to-reach place.

When is it necessary to replace the oil filter?

The oil filter needs to be replaced during each oil replacement. The replacement interval is indicated by the manufacturer in the vehicle’s service book. Typically, a service interval for a passenger car is 10-15 thousand kilometers.
